Dragons in the Water by Madeleine L'Engle

Simon Renier goes to Venezuela to sell a portrait for his aunt with his Uncle Forsyth. On the way, he befriends Polly and Charles O'Keefe, who are going with their father. On the way, there was an attempt to murder Simon. To add to the mystery, someone on board was murdered and the portrait was stolen. When they land in the Port of Dragons, the police investigate the murder and think they found the murderer but didn't know how the portrait was stolen. Who was the murderer, and who stole the portrait? Read the book to find out. I liked the book because it's full of mytery and suspense. -Michael K.
